What Is Communication?

What is Communication

Communication is talking and listening for starters.

Why do we have trouble communicating with our children about particular issues? For example drugs and alcohol. Why are we the human race having such a difficult time communicating with the children about this? It has been this way since I was a kid. I feel safe saying communication has been a big part of the problem when it comes to parents, children and drugs.

The goal is to raise the child's awareness of the consequences of making a choice to use drugs or alcohol. These consequences must be understood and accepted by the listener. This can be very difficult in many cases.

The worse case scenario would be if the listener has already used either. I hate to separate the two because drugs and alcohol are the same. The problem is one is legal by age and the other can be legal by prescription. Most of us know the end result if either is abused. For Some Tips On Effective Communication Skills Click Here.

What is communication? Why do we fail it so miserably and so often? There are several ways to fail in communication and so often we blame it on the other.

This is very serious business. Your child has a future that you the parent, guardian, teacher or mentor has the ability to help guide them. The love and commitment you instill in your children could all vanish if they decide to try drugs or alcohol. I do not know what the odds are that your child may face the decision to try drugs but I do know it could be their last decision.

To not try to communicate with the children can be a death sentence for all of you. It may not be actual death in a sense but if your child becomes addicted to drugs you may wish for death.

What is communication? How can I improve my communication skills to help raise my child's awareness of drug and alcohol use. You need to prepare yourself and your child as soon as possible. If I am scaring you it is because I fear drug and alcohol addiction and what it's doing to us and the world.

Some Ideas To Help You Help The Children

Parents need to ask themselves:

* Do I have the attention of my child?

* Am I explaining myself in an easily understood manner?

* Has my child understood?

* Does my child believe what I am telling them?

* Does my child accept what I am saying?

Non-verbal messages

It can be seen that people resort to a variety of verbal and non-verbal behavior in order to maintain a smooth flow of communication.

Such behavior includes head-nods, smiles, frowns, bodily contact, eye movements, laughter, body posture, language and many other actions.

The facial expressions of your child can be used by the parent or speaker. Glazed or down turned eyes indicate boredom or disinterest, as does fidgeting. Fully raised eyebrows signal disbelief and half raised indicate puzzlement. Posture of the child provides a means by which their attitude to the parent may be judged and act as pointer to their mood.

The parent should be sensitive to the signals being transmitted by the child. Their faces usually give a good indication of how they feel, and a good working knowledge of the meaning of non-verbal signals will prove invaluable to the parent.
